Signing up

The First step is often the hardest.

With fitness, sometimes the hardest thing is just getting started. Time and again we hear the saying, showing up is half the battle.

And before we show up – we must sign up. Registering before you arrive makes the class process smoother. And with the dr pilates app, for both apple and android devices, the process becomes even easier.

If you’re thinking to yourself how much are Pilates classes? then you’ll be happy to find a variety of pricing options from single sessions to package deals, ensuring there’s something that fits your budget.

We even offer active duty discounts and first-time-client specials!

Arriving at the Studio

You’ll want to arrive 10-15 minutes early for your class. We do have a late policy, so whether you’re joining us at dr pilates Los Angeles or dr pilates San Diego, give yourself a little extra time to get to the studio and find parking. Expect to wait for a few minutes outside at one of our welcoming patio benches while the previous class concludes. Once you enter the studio, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff – all who were once first-timers just like you. They’ll help you sign in, introduce you to the space, and answer any questions you have.

Getting Comfortable

What You Need to Know About the Equipment

One of the most intimidating aspects of pilates for beginners is the equipment, especially the reformer. If you’re wondering, What is a Pilates Reformer, know that you’re not alone and don’t worry. Our staff is available to answer any questions you have and walk you through any setup. The reformer is a versatile machine used in reformer pilates and is designed to challenge your body in ways traditional exercises and other pilates setups cannot. The reformer apparatus may look complicated, but don’t worry—the dr pilates instructors will guide you through each step, ensuring you remain comfortable and confident. We think you’ll love it!
If you have never seen or used a Pilates reformer, this video and this page will give you a great head start to your first class.

GRIP SOCKS

A Must-Have

At dr pilates, we require grip socks for safety and cleanliness. If you don’t have a pair, no problem! We offer a variety of options at both our Los Angeles and La Mesa locations to purchase. These socks provide extra grip, making it easier to perform exercises on the reformer with secure footing.

During the Class

What to Expect

Ok. So you’ve purchased one of our custom packs for first time members. You braved traffic and you’ve checked in with the front desk. You and your grip socks are ready to get it! Our sessions are 50 minutes long and begin with a gentle warm-up to prepare your body. The instructor will introduce themselves and ask if you have any injuries or areas of concern. So if you are considering pilates to rehabilitate and injury, or pilates to reduce stiffness and increase mobility, or pilates as a postnatal exercise – this is a good time to let your instructor know of any temporary physical limitations. This allows the pilates instructor to offer you personal modifications, ensuring a safe yet effective workout.

Small Classes. Big Impact.

At dr pilates, we believe in the power of personalized attention, which is why we keep our classes small. With only 10 reformers per class, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to receive the instructor’s full attention. This is particularly important for beginners as it allows you to learn the basics without feeling overwhelmed. Your first few sessions will focus on core stability, one of the foundational principles of Pilates.

The Aftermath

What Happens After Your First Pilates Class

Congratulations! Wipe your brow, swig some water! You’ve just completed your first Pilates class! 🎉🎉🎉

What now? First off, don’t be surprised if you feel some mild to moderate soreness in your core, legs, and arms. Reformer Pilates targets muscles you may not know you had, especially when it comes to core muscle strength. This soreness is a good sign that you’re on your way to seeing just how pilates can improve your core strength and flexibility.

Building Strength through Consistency

Now that you’re first class is behind you, keep that momentum going! The soreness you’re feeling is just the beginning of new strength! Continue those effects through a sustained community at dr pilates, by selecting one of our many package options for clients available at both or dr pilates Los Angeles and San Diego locations.

How Pilates Can Help You

Beyond Core Strength

As you continue with Pilates, you’ll notice improvements in your overall strength, particularly in your core. This is where Reformer Pilates shines compared to other forms of pilates, such as Lagree Pilates, which is a more intense and strenuous workout, or Somatic Pilates, which focuses more on body awareness. While each has its benefits, Reformer Pilates is uniquely positioned to help you build a strong foundation of core stability, essential for overall fitness and injury prevention.
Core strength is a significant focus of reformer Pilates but the benefits continue. Regular practice will improve flexibility, balance, mobility, and overall strength. Pilates can also help with lowering stress, and increasing a serene mental calm. If weight loss, improved posture, or increased overall mindfulness are goals, then a reformer Pilates class can be a key part of your holistic fitness routine. The low impact workout is ideal for all fitness levels and ages, from beginners to seasoned athletes.

Studio pilates vs. home pilates

With the rise of online fitness programs, you might consider trying Pilates at home. While convenient, home workouts can’t replicate the experience of a studio class. The personalized attention, community atmosphere and relationships, with access to specialized equipment and expert instructors are just a few reasons to choose the studio when it comes to home pilates vs studio pilates sessions.
